Operation Redwing Cherokee. View of the Cherokee nuclear test at Bikini Atoll, on 20th May 1956. Cherokee was the first test detonation of the United States' first air deliverable thermonuclear weapon and was part of Operation Redwing, a series of 17 nuclear test detonations carried out from May to July 1956. The smoke trails (horizontal) seen here are from rockets fired to obtain blast data.
