R31 airship gun position. Close-up of the gun position of a British R31 rigid airship. The R31 Class airships were constructed in the closing months of the First World War (1914-918). They were intended for fleet protection operations, and so were fitted with defensive machine guns on top of the envelope, at the stern and in the gondolas. Photographed circa (1914-1918).
