Transit of Venus. Artwork by Reverend Hirst of the 1769 Transit of Venus. This shows the 'black drop effect' where as Venus (black) gets closer to the limb of the Sun (curved line) a shadowy bridge closes the gap between the two, giving Venus a teardrop shape. This effect makes it hard to accurately determine the start and end of the transit.
