Mammoth fossil footprint excavation. Close-up of a mammoth fossil footprint being excavated by a researcher. This is one of several fossilised mammoth remains being excavated at the site of La Boella, near Canonja, Tarragona, Spain. These fossils date from around one million years ago. The mammoth was an elephant-like mammal that inhabited northern regions of the world and became extinct only a few thousand years ago.
