Enlarged spleen, post-mortem. The spleen acts as a filter for the blood. An enlarged spleen (splenomegaly) can be caused by infections such as malaria or tuberculosis, blood disorders like leukaemia or sickle cell anaemia, or tumours. Post-mortem examinations, also known as autopsies, are carried out to identify a cause of death, and to assess the health of a dead person's organs.
