Anne Stine Moe Ingstad (1918-1997), Norwegian archaeologist examining a fire pit at the site of what is believed to be a Norse house dating from the 11th century in Newfoundland, Canada. In 1960 Ingstad's archeologist husband discovered traces of a settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows on the island of Newfoundland. Over the next eight years Ingstad lead the excavation of the site, revealing the remains of an 11th century Norse, or Viking, settlement. The settlement is accepted as evidence if pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact with the Americas. This is Photographed in 1963.
