Henri de Ruolz (1808-1887). French industrial chemist Henri Catherine Camille comte de Ruolz-Montchal (Henri de Ruolz). In 1841 De Ruolz discovered the process for gilding and silver-plating metals using a voltaic pile, but his patent application was challenged by English industrialist George Elkington. The dispute was resolved and Ruolz continued his research, obtaining as many as seventeen patents relating to the plating of copper, brass, bronze and iron with nickel, and the electrode position of silver, platinum and other metals.
