Thistledown velvet ant (Dasymutilla gloriosa), Velvet ants are not ants, but wingless female wasps. Males of the species are winged. The thistledown velvet ant is found the southwestern USA. It has a painful sting and is releases foul-smelling chemicals when threatened.
