Mumps virus particle, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). A mumps virus particle consists of an RNA (ribonucleic acid) core surrounded by a envelope studded with surface proteins, which are used to attach to and penetrate a host cell. Mumps is a swelling of the parotid salivary glands, along with fever, headache and vomiting. Infection can spread to the pancreas, brain and testicles, and can cause permanent sterility in males.
