Animation of the path of the 21st August 2017 total solar eclipse. The inset at bottom left shows the geometry of the Sun, Earth and Moon, while the main image shows the position of the Moon's shadow as it crosses the USA. The pale white area shows the regions from which a partial eclipse is visible, while the central black area shows the total eclipse. The night side of the Earth is black. The pale white circle at centre is the subsolar point, at which the Sun is directly overhead.
