Nematode-killing fungus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of spore chains from the fungus Paecilomyces variotii. This fungus is found in soil and decaying plant matter. It is a type of nematophagous fungus, which is carnivorous and specialises in trapping and digesting nematode worms, and is often introduced to crop soil as a bio-nematicide, a biological control to kill nematode pests.
