Wild strawberry. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an alpine strawberry. The flesh of the alpine strawberry (Fragaria vesca. The beige "shields" are the achenes, the true fruits borne on a edible fleshy receptacle. Strawberries are a popular summer fruit, enjoyed for their sweet, distinctive flavour. The plant itself grows low to the ground, and is pollinated by insects. Magnification: x3 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
