False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) showing a network of dislocations in a piece of mechanically rolled sheet of nickel-aluminium alloy. Dislocations are line defects or discontinuities caused by slip in the crystal lattice of a solid as a result of stress. In this micrograph, the dislocations have piled up along the grain boundary just visible at top left. The dislocations developed when the cold-rolled sheet of nickel aluminium alloy was reheated, or annealed. The density of dislocations in such a material can be up to 500,000 million per square inch.
