Rock strata. Strata (horizontal bands) are parallel layers of different coloured or differently structured rock or soil lain down by a process of sedimentation. Individual layers may vary from millimetres to a kilometre or more. Limestone and shale are examples of sedimentary rocks, formed by the compaction of water deposits. Photographed in the Negev Desert, Israel.
