Natural gas liquefaction plant construction. Worker installing the Arktika specialised drilling unit at a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant under construction at the Yuzhno-Tambeiskoye gas field, Russia. LNG is predominantly methane. LNG plants extract the methane as a gas from a production well, then clean and dry it. It is liquefied by cooling to -162C. As a liquid it takes up about 1/600th of the volume of natural gas at room temperature. Although this is excellent for storage, it means that all the storage and handling equipment must be highly refrigerated.
