Auschwitz, together with neighbouring Birkenau, was a complex of Nazi concentration and extermination camps built during World War II. Auschwitz-Birkenau was operational from May 1940 to January 1945, during which time it is estimated that 1.1 million prisoners of war were killed there. It is now a museum.
