Cholesterol embolism. Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) angiogram of the sub-renal section of the aorta and the iliac arteries in a 68-year-old man with cholesterol embolism. This is a condition where cholesterol can accumulate on artery walls, and then detach and lodge elsewhere as an embolism, blocking the blood supply. In this case, the condition has affected the blood supply to the toes. Also present on this scan are aortic ulcers and atherosclerotic plaques (atheromas) in this part of the aorta and in the iliac arteries (lower centre) leading to the legs.
