Coral calcite crystals. This variant of the mineral calcite is known specifically as coral calcite because it is produced by bamboo coral (family Isididae). Calcite is a form of calcium carbonate, a very common mineral that occurs naturally in many rocks, such as limestone and chalk. This sample, found in France, is 12 centimetres long.
