Microscope footage of an ancient dark-winged fungus gnat (family Sciaridae) fossilised in amber. This piece of amber is 20 million years old and dates to the early Miocene epoch. It was found in what is now the Dominican Republic. Amber is the fossilised resin of coniferous trees, and often contains insects and other small animals, providing valuable insights into the ecosystems at the time.
