Kidney surgery. Surgeon removing a cancerous kidney during keyhole surgery. Keyhole (laparascopic) surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that is directed using a laparascope (lower centre). The laparascope is a type of endoscope that is inserted into the patient's abdomen. It sends an image of the area being operated on to a monitor which the surgeon uses to guide the surgery. Here the kidney (upper centre) has been cut away and wrapped in a bag inside the body before being pulled out through a small hole.
