Fish fossil. Rock containing a fossil of a Dapedium punctatum fish (centre). Fossils appear as rock slowly forms around objects buried in mud. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of buried animals and plants can be preserved. This specimen measures 19 centimetres in length and dates from around 188 million years ago in the late Jurassic period. It was found in Germany.
