Pipefish fossils. Rock containing fossils of two Sygnatus incrociata fish (centre). Fossils appear as rock slowly forms around objects buried in mud. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of buried animals and plants can be preserved. These specimens measure 26 centimetres in length and date from around 30 million years ago in the Oligocene epoch.
