Ectomycorrhiza fungi. The fungal mycelium (white) has completely enveloped the roots of a pine tree. A mycorrhiza is a symbiotic association between a soil fungi and the roots of a plant. Both organisms benefit from this association. Ectomycorrhiza remain on the outside of the root, and do not penetrate its tissues. Magnification: x28 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
