Cystic fibrosis. Coloured lateral X-ray of the lungs of a 15-year-old girl, showing bronchial dilatations (bronchiectasis) due to an accumulation of mucus in a case of cystic fibrosis. This hereditary condition (also called mucoviscidosis) results in the bronchi being clogged with mucus, causing severe breathlessness. Over-production of mucus and chronic inflammation of the lungs is treated with physiotherapy and antibiotic drugs, but the condition progresses and is ultimately fatal.
