Eye examination. Optician applying eyedrops to dilate a patient's pupils. This is done to help the optician view the interior of the eyes. A direct ophthalmoscope (hand-held illuminated microscope, not seen) is used to assess the health of the retina and optic nerve. The retina is the light-sensitive point at the back of the eyeball. Evaluation of the retina and optic nerve is important to check for potentially sight-threatening eye conditions.
