Colon polyp surgery, endoscope view. This operation, called a mucosectomy, is being done to remove a sessile polyp. Polyps are benign growths. They can be flat (sessile) or on a stalk (pedunculated). If they turn cancerous, or grow large enough to obstruct the colon, they are surgically removed. Mucosectomy is the surgical removal of the intestinal wall down to the level of the submucosa.
