According to Vasari, Leonardo loved all animals, especially horses. A large number of studies of horses from all periods of his artistic activity have been preserved. Drawings exist of them standing, walking, prancing, rearing etc, from all angles. This sketch is thought to be a study for a French equestrian monument and dates from c.1517-1518.
