Leonardo's studies in cardiac physiology produced the first accurate drawings of the structure and function of the heart. In this drawing of the dissected heart the moderator bands in the right ventricle are clearly visible. He described the moderator band and rightly ascribed its function as a muscular bridge between the walls of the right ventricle, preventing over-distension.
