Rectal cancer. Endoscope view of a malignant tumour (cancer) of the rectum. This is an adenocarcinoma, the most common form of colorectal cancer. They are abnormal and uncontrolled growths of the large bowel glands that normally produce mucus and absorb fluid. Rectal cancer is similar to colon cancer, and is often named colorectal cancer. Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers in North America and Western Europe. It is thought to be connected to a diet high in fat and low in fibre. The cancerous bit of the colon or rectum is surgically removed, followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy if the cancer has spread.
