Basal cell carcinoma on the ear of a 74-year-old man. This common cancer of the skin is usually caused by excessive exposure to the ultraviolet component of sunlight. The face and head are often affected. The cancer arises from the deepest or basal cell layer of the epidermis. It forms nodules and ulcers as it develops. It rarely spreads widely but is locally invasive and if untreated may cause significant destruction of tissue and disfigurement.
