Formation of the Himalayas. Computer artwork showing the geological structure under the Himalaya mountain range (grey peaks, left) and surrounding Tibetan Plateau (right). The Himalayas were formed where the Indo-Australian and Eurasian continental plates (blue-grey) collided. This started a process known as thrust tectonics. The colliding plates forced layers (strata) of rock (brown) to slide over one another, rising up and thickening the Earth's crust as they did so. One plate was forced under the other (yellow arrow) and down (orange arrow) into the Earth's mantle (orange). For an enlarged section under the Himalayas see image C002/3789.
