Light micrograph of a thin section of a silver/nickel composite metal. Composite metals such as this are used where the two constituent elements may not be alloyed in the normal fashion. Here, fibres of silver (the circular features) are held in a matrix of nickel. The resultant composite has a very high electrical conductivity, but resists the tendancy of pure silver to weld under high currents. Magnification x62 at 6x4.5cm size.
