Caption

Pulmonary distension in asthma. Frontal (left) and lateral (right) chest X-rays of the lungs of a 12-year-old girl who has a distended right lung caused by an asthma attack. The right lung is at left in the frontal view. During an asthma attack, the small airways (bronchioles) in the lungs constrict, making it difficult to breathe. This causes wheezing, coughing and breathlessness. Asthma usually develops during childhood, and generally improves as the patient matures.
