Calibrating a hydrophone. Close-up of an underwater microphone, or hydrophone (centre right), being calibrated. The hydrophone tracks sea animals that have been previously tagged with an acoustic transmitter by picking up the transmitter's sounds as a series of 'pings'. This enables the researcher to determine the animlals' approximate location and depth. Photographed at the National Physical Laboratory, in Teddington, UK.
