Larval anglerfishes are enveloped in a jelly casing. As they develop, this casing disappears. This is a larval female from the family Oneirodidae. She is close to the end of metamorphosis and has no jelly casing left. It was trawled up in the Gulf of Mexico, 2016, from between 1,000 and 600 meters depth. Image courtesy of the DEEPEND project.
