General anaesthetic. Anaesthetist administering a general anaesthetic through a cannula (pink and clear plastic) into a vein in the back of a patient's hand. General anaesthetic is a combination of drugs that cause a person to become unconscious, whilst combining analgesic (painkilling) and amnesic (memory blocking) effects. General anaesthesia is used in surgical procedures that would be either too difficult to perform, or too traumatic for the patient to undergo, whilst conscious. The effects are fully reversible.
