Smoker's lungs and emphysema. Axial section through a coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of the left lung of a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who has developed a form of COPD called emphysema. The lung is seen from above. Emphysema is a disorder where the air sacs in the lungs become enlarged and damaged reducing the surface area for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. The condition is associated with smokers and causes impairment of respiratory function.
