Usual interstitial pneumonia. Coloured axial 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of the lungs of a patient with usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP), with lung scarring (interstitial fibrosis, blue), the effects of emphysema (orange), and bulla (damaged alveoli, green). These disorders have caused the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs to become enlarged and damaged reducing the surface area for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. UIP is a form of interstitial lung disease. This is a view from below.
