Platybelodon, illustration. This extinct prehistoric herbivorous mammal is a mastodont and proboscid, shown in what is now Mongolia. Its broad, flat lower incisors were used as a shovel. This animal was an early relative of the elephant. It lived during the Miocene (around 15-4 million years ago) and ranged over Africa, Europa, Asia and North America.
