Caption

Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains from the flowering herbaceous plant Cosmos bipinnatus, known commonly as garden cosmos or Mexican aster. The pollen grains contain a male gamete (reproductive cell) that is intended to fertilise an egg or ovule (female gamete). This will initiate the formation of a seed for a new plant. Magnification: x2000 when printed at 10cm wide.
