Varanosaurus, illustration. This synapsid lived around 280 million years ago, during the Early Permian. It is thought to have looked similar to modern monitor lizards. It reached lengths of around 1 to 1.5 metres. The early synapsids, such as this pelycosaur synapsid, are sometimes described as mammal-like reptiles.
