Skull of Palaeoryctes, illustration. This extinct shrew-like mammal was found in what was the southern USA during the Palaeocene (66 to 56 million years ago). It was around 12 centimetres long, with this skull specimen around 1.1 centimetres long. The teeth are typical of those of insectivores.
