Hyaenodon, illustration. This extinct prehistoric mammal was a powerful predator that lived from 42 to 15 million years ago, from the Late Eocene to the Early Miocene. Its fossils are found in Eurasian, North America, and Africa. It also (as here) scavenged on carrion. In the background are a couple of Deinotheres (an elephant-like prehistoric mammal).
