Pachycrocuta prehistoric hyenas. Illustration of a group of giant short-faced hyenas (Pachycrocuta brevirostris) feeding on carrion. This extinct prehistoric mammal lived around 780,000 years ago, during the Middle Pleistocene, and was widespread across Eurasia. It was a large hyena, standing about 1 metre tall at the shoulder.
