Protohydrochoerus giant capybara, illustration. This extinct prehistoric mammal is a giant form of the capybara. This capybara lived during the Pliocene (4 to 2.5 million year ago) in South America. Its skull (some 50 centimetres long) was about double the size of modern capybaras.
