Hyracotherium, illustration. This extinct prehistoric mammal is one of the animals ancestral to the group that evolved into the modern horse. It lived during the Eocene between 60 and 45 million years ago. It was a relatively small animal, only about 80 centimetres in length. Its fossils are found in Europe and North America.
