Mudstone containing fossils, illustration. Mudstones and shales are sedimentary rocks formed from the slow compaction over many years of layers of clay mud. Animals and plants that die and are covered by the mud layers can form fossils such as the plant one seen here. Later erosion reveals the fossils many millions of years later.
