Baby born by caesarean section. Medical staff caring for a newborn baby that has just been delivered by caesarean section. A suction device is being used to remove mucus from the baby's airways. A caesarean section involves making an incision through the abdomen and uterus in order to remove the baby from its mother. Caesareans are usually performed when a vaginal delivery would lead to complications. Photographed at St Mary's Hospital, Lacor, Gulu, Uganda. For a sequence of images from the operation, see C037/5404 to C037/5420.
