Tetanus vaccination. Dose of the tetanus vaccine being injected into a schoolgirl's upper arm. Several doses are given in childhood to immunize against the disease. Tetanus is caused by Clostridium tetani bacteria, which produce a toxin that acts on nerves controlling muscle activity. Painful muscle spasms occur which may be fatal.
