High-purity aluminium. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a sample of high- purity aluminium. Very high-purity metal is needed for applications such as composite material manufacture or coating mirrors for astronomy. A sample of highly-refined aluminium is placed on a tungsten substrate in a vacuum, then is heated until it vapourises. The metal is then deposited on mirror glass or another substrate in its highest-purity form. Magnification x90 at 35mm size.
